The ATO has set up a new page on its website called “Building confidence”, which talks about its current compliance activities, and the amounts of tax and penalties it has collected in 2014 from its various initiatives.
\nSome of the areas that the ATO has stated it will be focusing on are:

\nWork-related expenses:
\n\t\u2013\tmotor vehicle expenses for travelling between home and work;
\n\t\u2013\tovernight travel; and
\n\t\u2013\tthe work-related proportion of use for computers, phones and other electronic devices.

\nRental property expenses:
\n\t\u2013\texcessive deductions being claimed for holiday homes (deductions should be limited to the amount
\n of income earned, or to the number of days actually rented out at a commercial rate);
\n\t\u2013\thusbands and wives inappropriately splitting rental income and deductions for jointly owned
\n properties; and
\n\t\u2013\tinterest deductions being claimed for the private proportion of loans.<\/p>\n
Cash economy:
\n\t\u2013\tthe building and construction industry; and
\n\t\u2013\tthe restaurant, caf\u00e9 and takeaway industry.<\/p>\n
