{"id":13975,"date":"2017-03-23T07:25:51","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T19:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantiphy.com.au\/oldbackup\/ride-sourcing-is-taxi-travel\/"},"modified":"2020-11-29T00:17:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-28T12:47:07","slug":"ride-sourcing-is-taxi-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantiphy.com.au\/oldbackup\/ride-sourcing-is-taxi-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Ride-sourcing is &#8216;taxi travel&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent case, the Federal Court has agreed with the ATO that &#8216;ride-sourcing&#8217; (such as that provided using Uber) is &#8216;taxi travel&#8217; within the meaning of the GST law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ATO has advised people who are taking up ride-sourcing to earn income should:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep records;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have an Australian business number (ABN);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">register for GST, regardless of how much they earn, and pay GST on the full fare<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received from passengers for each trip they provide;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lodge activity statements; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include income from ride-sourcing in their<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">income tax returns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drivers are also entitled to claim income tax deductions and GST credits (for GST paid) on expenses apportioned to the ride-sourcing services they have supplied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ATO warns that they can match people who provide ride-sourcing through data-matching, and will continue to write to them to explain their tax obligations.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent case, the Federal Court has agreed with the ATO that &#8216;ride-sourcing&#8217; (such as that provided using Uber) is &#8216;taxi travel&#8217; within the meaning of the GST law.
