You may be able to claim your self-education expenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve thought about upskilling or undertaking professional development this year, you may be able to claim some of your self-education expenses in your 2024\u20132025 income tax return.<\/p>\n<h3>You incur self-education expenses when you:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>take courses at an educational institution (even if you don\u2019t gain a formal qualification);<\/li>\n<li>undertake training provided by an industry or professional organisation;<\/li>\n<li>attend work-related conferences or seminars; or<\/li>\n<li>do self-paced learning and study tours in Australia or overseas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your self-education expenses need to have a sufficient connection to your current employment income in order to make a claim. This means that your study must eithermaintain or improve the specific skills or knowledge you use <em>in your current role<\/em>, or be likely to result in increased income <em>in your current role<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that sometimes only certain subjects or components of your study are sufficiently connected to your work \u2013 in these cases, you&#8217;ll need to apportion your expenses.<\/p>\n<h3>If you meet the eligibility criteria you may be able to claim a deduction for:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>tuition, course or seminar fees incurred in enrolling in a full fee paying place;<\/li>\n<li>general course expenses (eg stationery, internet usage);<\/li>\n<li>depreciation on assets like laptops;<\/li>\n<li>transport costs between home or work and your place of study;<\/li>\n<li>accommodation and meals when your course requires you be away from home for one or more nights; or<\/li>\n<li>interest on loans where you use the funds to pay for deductible self-education expenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve thought about upskilling or undertaking professional development this year, you may be able to claim some of your self-education expenses in your 2024\u20132025 income tax return.
