{"id":16916,"date":"2025-12-02T13:00:02","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T01:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantiphy.com.au\/oldbackup\/?p=16916"},"modified":"2025-12-02T13:00:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T01:30:02","slug":"christmas-gifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantiphy.com.au\/oldbackup\/christmas-gifts\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Gifts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>With the holiday season approaching, many employers and businesses want to reward their staff and loyal clients\/customers\/suppliers.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Again, it is important to understand how gifts to staff and clients, etc., are handled &#8216;tax-wise&#8217;.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Gifts that are<\/b><b><i> not<\/i><\/b><b> considered to be entertainment\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These generally include a Christmas hamper, a bottle of whisky or wine, gift vouchers, a bottle of perfume, flowers or a pen set, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Briefly, the general FBT and income tax consequences for these gifts are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>gifts to employees and their family members \u2013 <b>are liable to FBT<\/b> (except where the &#8216;less than $300&#8217; minor benefit exemption applies) and <b>tax deductible<\/b>; and<\/li>\n<li>gifts to clients, suppliers, etc. \u2013 <b>no FBT<\/b>, and <b>tax deductible<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Gifts that <\/b><b><i>are<\/i><\/b><b> considered to be entertainment\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These generally include, for example, tickets to attend the theatre, a live play, sporting event, movie, etc, a holiday airline ticket, or an admission ticket to an amusement centre.<\/p>\n<p>Briefly, the general FBT and income tax consequences for these gifts are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>gifts to employees and their family members \u2013 <b>are liable to FBT<\/b> (except where the &#8216;less than $300&#8217; minor benefit exemption applies) and <b>tax deductible<\/b> (unless they are exempt from FBT); and<\/li>\n<li>gifts to clients, suppliers, etc. \u2013 <b>no FBT<\/b> and <b>not tax deductible<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Non-entertainment gifts at functions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>What if a Christmas party is held at a restaurant at a cost of less than $300 for each person attending, <\/i><b><i>and<\/i><\/b><i> employees are given a gift or a gift voucher (for their spouse) to the value of $150?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Actual method used for meal entertainment<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Under the actual method <b>no FBT <\/b>is payable, because the cost of each separate benefit (being the expenditure on the Christmas party and the gift respectively) is less than $300 (i.e., the benefits are not aggregated).<\/p>\n<p>No deduction is allowed for the food and drink expenditure, but the cost of each gift is <b>tax deductible<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>50\/50 method used for meal entertainment<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Where the 50\/50 method is adopted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50% of the total cost of food and drink <b>is liable to FBT<\/b> and <b>tax deductible<\/b>; and<\/li>\n<li>in relation to the gifts:<b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>the total cost of all gifts <b>is not liable to FBT<\/b> because the individual cost of each gift is less than $300; and<\/li>\n<li>as the gifts are not entertainment, the cost is <b>tax deductible<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>We understand that this can all be somewhat bewildering, so if you would like a little help, just contact our office.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the holiday season approaching, many employers and businesses want to reward their staff and loyal clients\/customers\/suppliers.
