In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis that has some of us rethinking our morning coffee routines and midway through a second year of continuous interest rate hikes, one of the most expensive Australian house sales of all time took place in Point Piper. Not to be outdone, record-breaking sales in QLD and VIC followed suit. From European-influenced porte-cochères to a brick four bedroom for $50M, here are five of the most expensive property sales across Australia so far this year.
Tallebudgera Connection Road, Tallebudgera, QLD
In February, the most expensive home ever auctioned in QLD sold for $42 million…cash. The 10-bedroom mansion shattered Gold Coast records, with a buyer making an unconditional cash offer before the auction even began. Announced on the auction room floor, the offer went unmatched, and the rest is now property history. Spanning 17 hectares with a European-style portè-cochere (AKA a very fancy doorway), the Tallebudgera estate also boasts ten bathrooms, a ballroom with a second kitchen, a gym, indoor pool, and enough gold décor to turn Trump Tower green with envy.
Fitzwilliam Rd, Vaucluse, NSW
Claiming perhaps the best waterfront spot in one of Sydney’s most exclusive suburbs, ‘Point Seymour’ changed hands after 84 years of ownership by the Bracey family. Though the official price is unknown, “well-placed sources” say the three level property dubbed “the wedding cake house” sold in the $40 million range last month. Renowned for its unique curved frontage (believed to have been built in about 1910), the property sits on 1,271 sqms at the end of a cul-de-sac between the inlets of Vaucluse and Parsley Bay.
Albany Road, Toorak, VIC
Just weeks ago, Melbourne recorded its third-highest residential sale on record thanks to this grand mansion on the prestigious Albany Road. Though the final price has been withheld, the residence, dubbed ‘Huntingfield’ was listed with a price guide of $55 million to $60 million. On a large land size of 3,300 square metres, the home features five bedrooms all with en-suites, a tennis court, swimming pool, gym, sauna, wine cellar, and an eight-car basement garage.

Wunulla Rd, Point Piper, NSW
Selling for $69 million in April, this “Spanish Mission-style” mansion ranks among Sydney’s top 10 most expensive house sales of all time. Named “Mainhead”, the property was purchased in 1952 for £22,500, and sold in 2004 for $10.5 million. With views across the harbour to Rose Bay, the fully renovated 5 bed, 5 bath home boasts one of Point Piper’s only permanent moorings, as well as its own private beach in Sydney’s most expensive postcode.
Gaerloch Avenue, Tamarama, NSW
In further proof that it’s all about location (location, location…), a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom brick home built in the 1920s sold for an eyewatering $50 million last month. Why? Because it sits on a 1100-square-metre block on the clifftops of Tamarama. Last sold in 1959 for £9750 to Dimity Griffiths—who lived in the home for 64 years—the sale doubles the previous $25 million record for Sydney’s eastern beaches. While the buyer remains anonymous, plans for the property are an easy guess. Expect to see some bulldozers on the beachfront later this year.
